NASA Readies to Bid Adieu to InSight Spacecraft

NASA’s InSight lander is preparing to end its mission as its power supply dwindles. The lander has been exploring Mars since November 2018, and has provided details about the planet’s interior layers, liquid core, magnetic field remnants, weather, and seismic activity. Its seismometer has detected over 1,300 marsquakes, which will be added to NASA’s Planetary Data System and an international archive run by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology. The InSight team is now focusing on preserving the lander’s data and winding down the mission, which will end when InSight misses two consecutive communication sessions with the spacecraft orbiting Mars.
