Kinéis and Semtech Enhance Access to Satellite Connectivity with Terrestrial IoT

Kinéis and Semtech announced a strategic collaboration that significantly enhances satellite connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT) by leveraging standard terrestrial solutions. This partnership aims to provide millions of users with simple and direct access to global coverage.

Integration of Kinéis’s Spatial Connectivity into Semtech’s Chipsets

Kinéis, a French satellite operator known for providing global IoT connectivity, and Semtech, a global leader in high-performance semiconductors and IoT systems, have joined forces to integrate satellite and terrestrial IoT capabilities into a single chip.

Kinéis specializes in transmitting data to end-users in near-real time with low data rates and minimal energy consumption. Semtech, renowned for its LoRa® and cellular IoT systems, brings high-quality connectivity and cloud services to this collaboration.

This collaboration allows users of Semtech LoRa Edge™ chips (including LR1110 and LR1120) to access global IoT connectivity through Kinéis satellite connectivity, in addition to LoRaWAN® terrestrial connectivity without additional electronic modules. The integration simplifies the implementation of hybrid terrestrial-satellite devices that support multiple standard connectivity protocols.

Enhanced Functionality with Semtech LR1110 Chips

With the integration of Semtech LR1110 chips, users of terrestrial LoRaWAN IoT connectivity can now:

  • Receive data via terrestrial LoRaWAN connectivity when available.
  • Receive data via Kinéis satellite IoT connectivity from remote locations.
  • Receive location data complementary to GNSS information.

Kinéis supports partners using terrestrial IoT by providing a reference design and an instruction manual for creating equivalent radio modules, facilitating seamless access to space connectivity.
