Serco, the international provider of services to governments, has been awarded a new contract by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) to run the Copernicus Analyst and Controller Service. The contract, valued at €21m, spans a duration of six years. To deliver the services, Serco will work together with Telespazio Germany GmbH.
Serco will provide teams of spacecraft controllers and analysts who will be responsible for monitoring and controlling the satellites’ journey on a 24/7 basis, ensuring the health and safety of the spacecraft, and downloading data from the satellite. This contract is a continuation of an existing contract, which started in 2014 and already involves 19 employees. Nine more employees will be recruited to deliver the CO2 Monitoring satellite mission, which will be the first mission to measure how much carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere specifically through human activity using satellite data. The team will operate from Darmstadt, Germany.
The award of this contract draws on Serco’s expertise in providing real-time space operations and reinforces Serco’s reputation for delivering effective and reliable services to prestigious space agencies.

Serco provides a wide range of services to EUMETSAT, including real-time satellite operations services for all EUMETSAT satellite constellations and other engineering activities supporting the satellite and ground segments. Serco supports the Copernicus programme, the European Union Earth Observation programme, through a variety of services across Europe, ensuring that Copernicus has the data and systems it needs to deliver its essential Earth observation services.
