BlackSky Secures Air Force Research Contract

BlackSky Technology has secured a competitive contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to develop an automated target recognition service capable of tracking vehicles in real-time from space.

The contract, funded by the Space Development Agency and awarded through AFWERX Direct to Phase 2, positions BlackSky as a key player in the innovation arm of the Air Force.

The automated target recognition service will leverage radio frequency and electro-optical satellite sensor data to monitor mobile assets and disseminate intelligence to devices and analysts worldwide. BlackSky will utilize its existing satellite imagery and analysis platform for this project.

BlackSky CTO Patrick O’Neil emphasized the company’s rapid-revisit capabilities and cutting-edge automated detection innovations, which enable customers to conduct ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) operations from space.

In addition to this contract win, BlackSky has already secured over $200 million in contracts in 2023 and is gearing up to launch its third-generation satellites.
