The merger between Viasat and Inmarsat has received regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), marking another step forward for the deal. The FCC stated that the merger will serve the public interest and will not harm competition in government satellite services, aviation services, and maritime communications services. SpaceX had petitioned to block the deal, arguing that Viasat operates in certain spectrum bands in violation of its license, but the FCC denied the petition. The merger is expected to close later this month pending approval from the European Commission, which has a June 29 deadline for investigation. A similar review by the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK recently approved the deal, citing growing competition from Starlink and other players.
