Space for Wind Energy: use cases and market opportunities – ESA Commercialisation Gateway

In mid-2022, total installed wind power in Europe amounted to 220GW, of which 28.3GW was offshore. The European rankings for total accumulated installations are topped by Germany, followed by Spain, the UK, France and Sweden, with Germany and Spain ranking in the top five worldwide.

Onshore and offshore wind are set to grow further, with offshore expected to increase to at least 25 times current capacity by 2030. The European Commission estimates that between 240 and 450GW of offshore wind power will be needed by 2050.

Wind energy provides opportunities and challenges in which the use of space technologies and data can play a significant role, mostly through Earth observation (EO), navigation and satellite communication. These will support and improve the information provided by in situ sensors and help manage the identification of locations for offshore wind parks and their operations and maintenance, as well as the coordination of surrounding transportation and fisheries.
