First Arab Space Walk: UAE Astronaut Exits ISS

On April 28, 2023, Emirati astronaut Sultan Alneyadi made history by becoming the first Arab astronaut to conduct a spacewalk. Alneyadi, who has been dubbed the “Sultan of Space,” is currently on a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after launching on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in March. The spacewalk, which lasted for around six and a half hours, was conducted alongside NASA’s Stephen Bowen and involved changing the Radio Frequency Group unit and preparing for the installation of solar panels. The UAE is quickly making its mark in the world of space exploration, having sent an unmanned spacecraft to Mars in 2021 and a rover to the Moon last year. The country is also developing a second rover, Rashid 2, after the loss of the Rashid Moon rover earlier this week.
