The European Space Agency (ESA) has welcomed a new group of astronaut candidates at its European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. The five candidates, Sophie Adenot, Pablo Álvarez Fernández, Rosemary Coogan, Raphaël Liégeois and Marco Sieber, will undergo a one-year basic training programme to prepare them for future space missions. They were selected from over 22,500 applicants from ESA Member States in November 2022. During their first year of training, the candidates will learn technical and scientific skills, space systems and operations, and undergo scuba diving for spacewalk and survival training. Upon completion of their basic training in spring 2024, they will be certified ESA astronauts and ready to enter the pre-assignment training phase. The candidates will join the current group of ESA astronauts who are actively involved in space missions and research projects.
