ASI: Utilizing PRISMA for Vegetation Indicator Retrieval

ASI: Utilizing PRISMA for Vegetation Indicator Retrieval

The ASI project “Sviluppo di Prodotti Iperspettrali Prototipali Evoluti” processed the PRISMA image, which is a 30 km x 30 km spotlight acquisition. The project’s main objective is to prototype a series of L3 / L4 level added value products derived from hyperspectral data processing. One of the prototypes developed is called “Vegetation Indicators,” which aims to extract biophysical variables for crop characterization and health status assessment. These variables include Leaf area index (LAI), Absorbed fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), Vegetation cover fraction (FCOVER), and Chlorophyll ab (LCC).

The image showcases the Maccarese site, located in a coastal agricultural area owned by Maccarese SpA in the North of Rome. The main crops grown in this area throughout the year include maize (silage), small grain cereals (winter wheat and durum wheat, barley, triticale), alfalfa, field bean, and forage crops. The developed prototype combines radiative transfer models and Machine Learning Regression models. It was trained using a hybrid approach and applied to the PRISMA image of June 27, 2021, to estimate the chlorophyll content at the leaf level.
