Describe your job…
I am currently a Mechatronics Engineer of Hermes, the product and delivery team for Fleet. My general responsibilities include delivering and maintaining Fleet’s internet of things (IoT) solutions for our customers. Having skills in both software and hardware, I get the opportunity to play around with field sensors and our Portal gateway to maintain the pipeline of data. In addition to this, I have taken the lead on developing an in-house sensor, built from the silicon-up to conduct in situ seismic analysis. This geologic instrument has stemmed from Fleet’s involvement in the Accelerated Discovery Initiative (ADI) project with the aim of revolutionising IoT technology for mineral discovery and terrestrial exploration. This technology is in the process of being re-designed to greatly improve its technical capabilities and power-consumption for other-worldly deployment.
Why do you love what you do?
Being innovative and creative is a core component of my work ethic. I have always taken my responsibilities seriously and love to focus on a project or piece of work that I can personally mature. During my time at Fleet, I have had the opportunity to work on projects, such as the ADI project, which have grown substantially in a short period of time. I love to see my work flourish and have an impact on the capabilities of Fleet. The work we are doing here not only impacts our customers, but has the potential to change what Australia can do for the global space industry.
What do you love about working in the space industry?
The space industry presents all aspects of a career that I love having. With academic qualifications in aerospace and mechatronic engineering, I can find a career that I love combining these two fields with everything in between. Space is all about advancing human understanding and technological ability. I am super excited to be a part of an organisation that is directly involved in the development of the Australian space industry, exploring new worlds.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I am a bit old-fashioned when it comes to music (and other things), so it should come as no surprise that I might be head-banging to vintage jazz and swing music whilst working.
What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?
There will be a time in your life when all of the hard-work, academic vigour, and commitment to personal interests pay off both in your professional and personal life.
If Adelaide is not your home town, where have you moved from?
I grew up and completed my undergraduate degree in Melbourne, then decided to pursue additional academic endeavours in Sydney. I moved from Sydney after completing my Masters degree and wanted to experience a different lifestyle. Adelaide has been a great city to live in, but after several years away from home, I still cannot satisfy my coffee addiction.
Which movie star would play you in a movie adaptation of your life?
Is it too late to say James Dean?
